Botox Injections

Botox InjectionsThe use of Botox (botulinum toxin type A) is not new. Botox has been used in the clinical setting for many years to weaken or paralyze muscle groups by ophthalmologists neurologists, and plastic surgeons to treat and balance facial paralysis and a variety of spastic disorders.

The application of this tool for beautification has become most popular in the last several years after experienced clinicians noted improvement in facial wrinkles. More visible wrinkles are "dynamic lines" caused by facial muscles. When Botox is used to weaken these muscles, the lines will be less obvious. Frown lines and crow’s feet are most commonly treated. Botox is now FDA approved for this purpose.

Botox is one way to evaluate the effect of a brow lift. In addition, it may help facial asymmetry secondary to facial paralysis and spastic conditions of the eyes. Botox may be used to paralyze sweat glands in those patients with hyperhidrosis who have excess sweating.

Botox may also be used to prevent migraine headaches. Some insurance carriers will compensate for these procedures.

Procedure

A small, 30 gauge, needle is used to inject the agent into the desired muscle group. It may take several days to take effect, and may last up to 3 months. When muscle function starts to return, re-injection will be required to maintain the result. Results seems to improve with each injection.

Dr. Dabb offers Botox treatments by the injection or within a "Botox package", which consists of a total of 8 treatments, repeated every two months. The package can save a patient $1000 in total cost and may produce more prolonged results.

Complications

Complications include temporary eyelid ptosis (drooping) if too much agent is placed near the eyelid, allergic reactions, and bruising from the injection.
