Endermologie
Endermologie
is a system of mechanical gentle massage developed in France by
Louis Paul Guitay (the company, LPG, is named after him). The
system consists of a computer controlled system of rollers attached
to a handpiece which adheres to the skin through gentle suction.
The system may be adjusted to the specific
needs of the patient, whether it is to treat post-liposuction
patients, treat cellulite, or enhance performance. This is the
first FDA approved system for the temporary treatment of cellulite.
The system mobilizes the subcutaneous tissue. It acts on interstitial
fluid and thus smooths the interface skin and subcutaneous tissue.
This
tones the skin and subcutaneous layers much more efficiently than
deeper-acting, conventional massage. This effects the blood vessels,
lympatics, and connective tissue, leaving a smoother and toned
appearance.
Application of the system at the center is directed for the treatment
of cellutlite, body contour in conjunction with diet and exercise,
and post-liposuction patients. In the post-liposuction patient,
the treatment is started approximately 3 weeks after the procedure.
This is frequently combined with external ultrasound applications.
This combination of treatment diminishes swelling faster and allows
more even healing. The internal contraction of the subcutaneous
plane is controlled with Endermologie, allowing for a much smoother
and predictable result.

Cellulite is treated with a series of 16 to 18 treatments. Pre-treatment
digital photographs and body composition assessment are obtained.
A treatment plan is devised and a bi-weekly schedule is usually
instituted. In the more difficult cases, this is combined with
external ultrasound. A similar approach is utilized for treatment
of the waistline.

All applications of Endermologie involve improving blood supply
and lymphatic drainage of the skin. In many centers around the
country, the system has been found to be beneficial for symptom
relief in patients with fibromyalgia. It may also be utilized
to modify scar and following traumatic injury.
One of the newest applications of Endermologie is in the acceleration
of performance in athletes. Endermologie treatments in athletes,
who have experienced significant exertion, have been found to
mobilize lactic acid 6 times faster, diminish tissue edema by
a factor of 3 (thus less post-exertion soreness), and
an improvement of power of 5%. This allows for earlier return
to training and participation. This has been demonstrated in such
diverse endeavors as soccer, golf, and body building. There is
even an equine unit to treat race and performance horses.
