Aesthetic Rhinoplasty
Concept -
This is a procedure to change the shape of the nose and its’
relationship to the structures of face. Aesthetic rhinoplasty
is
designed
purely to improve the appearance of the nose, and reconstructive
rhinoplasty is designed to change appearance and function
of the nose, in order to help breathing. An appropriate rhinoplasty
should be designed to bring harmony to the face.
After careful physical examination, digital photographs
are reviewed on the imaging system. The relationships between
the nose, upper lip, and chin are reviewed in the profile.
Careful assessment of the “aesthetic plane”
(see photo) is noted; this is a line drawn from the glabella
to the base of the nose and to the chin. In addition, the
angle that the nose meets the lip and the relative length
of the nose to the lip is evaluated.
Other
views are also reviewed to assess the aesthetic impact of
changing the shape of the nose. In this way, the surgeon and
the patient can communicate on what the ideal goal should
be. Obviously, the computer-generated imaged result cannot
always be obtained; however, it does create an appropriate
stage for communication and setting of realistic goals.
Surgery
- Most rhinoplasties are done with what is
called an "open" procedure. This requires a small
external scar at the base of the nose and gives surgeon the
best view of the anatomic structures.
This approach allows for meticulous reshaping of the nose
and the application of cartilage grafts which are frequently
utilized. These grafts are most likely obtained from the nose
itself.
Most surgeons find rhinoplasty to be the most challenging
aesthetic procedure. Dr. Dabb has performed many rhinoplasties
over the years that he has practiced. The goal is always a
balanced, non-operated appearance.
Recovery -
The nose will have an internal and external splint for up
to one week. There is significant swelling; most patients
are bothered by the swelling, but find the procedure minimally
painful.
Return to work -
1 week
Full Activity
- 6 weeks
Complications
- Bleeding, decreased sensation, persistent swelling, asymmetry,
airway obstruction.
